Types Of Academic Writing:

1. Descriptive Academic Writing

Descriptive academic writing may include a lot of things. Such a write-up often becomes lengthy. Though writing may become lengthy, there is no scope to write anything out of the topic. In the case of descriptive academic writing, the format is not too complicated. For example, an essay or dissertation should have three parts. These parts are introduction, body, and conclusion. The content should be informative. It should include important facts, figures, diagrams, data, etc.

2. Persuasive Academic Writing

Persuasive writing is basically argumentative writing. In this type of academic writing, the writer has to establish his agreement or disagreement on a topic based on logic and facts. In schools and colleges, students are asked to write such argumentative essays by the teachers. Through such essays, teachers judge analyzing ability, reasoning ability and persuasive writing skills of the students. Persuasive writing should follow a proper format. The format is given in the following section.

·       A simple and lucid introduction.

In expository academic writing, ideas and evidence are evaluated or investigated. There are a lot of conventional ideas. Though the majority of people agree to these ideas, some people may disagree. Writing an essay disagreeing on a conventional idea is known as expository writing. Sometimes, people believe in myths. Through expository essay or dissertation, popular myths are destroyed through logic and data.

Writing a thesis is an example of such writing.  Students, pursuing master’s degree courses, have to write a thesis. Generally, a thesis has been written in either persuasive style or expository style.

4. Narrative Writing

Narrative writing is also a part of academic writing. In the science lab, students have to conduct different experiments. Students have to write details of such experiments in a narrative style. An academic report should be written in a narrative style.

5. Assignment Writing

The last type of academic writing is assignment writing. In schools and colleges, teachers provide a set of questions to students. The students have to write answers to these questions. Through assignments, teachers judge the knowledge, writing skills, and competence of the students on a specific subject. To write assignments, you have to acquire descriptive, persuasive, expository, and narrative writing skills.
